Whether you're using powder coatings for indoor or outdoor applications, you need a powder coating selection that's durable and weather-resistant. The right powder coating can protect your architecture from harsh outdoor lighting, heavy equipment impacts and moisture. When used in coatings, Triglicydyl Isocyanurate Crosslinkers (TGICs) react with polyester resin to create durable, weather-resistant films that easily adhere to substrates.
TGIC is highly useful for exterior projects and is prized for its long life and vibrant color. However, TGIC has been classified as a Category 2 mutagen by the European Economic Union, which has limited the sale of TGIC products in Europe and Australia. In America, TGIC powder coatings are still on the market and remain popular. TGIC coatings are also used frequently elsewhere in the world, from the Middle East to Eastern Europe.
Today, there are many TGIC-free coatings being produced that achieve the same durable finished and vibrant color as TGIC coatings. As TGIC-free coating technology progresses, many finishes offer superior first-pass transfer efficiencies of up to 20%. When you use TGIC-free coatings, more powder is transferred to the part and less becomes trapped in the recovery system than with TGIC coatings, heavily decreasing the number of fine particles produced during operation. In other words, TGIC-free coatings are just as affordable as TGIC, and they are more cost-efficient to apply.
TGIC-free technology is preferable to TGIC coating when it comes to projects that require holding an electrostatic charge and achieving consistent batch-to-batch finishing. The superior coating technology of TGIC-free coatings also works well for complex jobs with difficult-to-reach interior corners and edges.
TGIC and TGIC-free coatings can be applied via similar methods. These types of coatings are preferable in the application process for their low-temperature cure requirement and overbake resistance. Polyester powder coatings have few drawbacks in the application stage, and Super Durable Polyesters are preferable when your job demands intense exterior durability. When you apply polyester powder coatings, you're giving your architecture the ability to weather the elements.
