Corrosion-Resistant Technology

Most powder coatings provide excellent corrosion resistance, although choosing the right formula can provide you with a superior solution. Powder coatings made with epoxy offer top-tier corrosion resistance because of their chemistry. Epoxy has a polymeric backbone that anchors itself to the pretreatment solution and metal of the workpiece to protect it from any salt, moisture or environmental threat. By combining epoxy with zinc for further fortification, powder coating maintains superior corrosion resistance compared to unprotected ferrous substrates. 

However, epoxy-based corrosion-resistant technology has a difficult time maintaining its integrity in intense UV light. Therefore, epoxy-based coating technology should be paired with UV-resistant coatings when it is used in an outdoor environment. Polyurethane powder coatings also provide ample corrosion resistance and are excellent for interior projects, but they require UV coatings for outdoor applications. With a variety of corrosion-resistant properties, epoxy and polyurethane powder coatings offer a cost-effective solution for protecting your equipment and components. 

Applications of Corrosion-Resistant Powder Coating

Before a corrosion-resistant powder coating can be applied, the substrate must be thoroughly washed and decontaminated. At Advanced Coating Technology, we decontaminate the substrate by removing oil, dirt and oxides using an alkaline cleaner and rinse. If required, we provide mechanical cleansing with abrasion and blasting to achieve a clean substrate. Ferrous substrates are then treated with iron, zinc or zirconium to achieve maximum corrosion resistance. 

After we've applied the epoxy or polyurethane powder coating, we apply a durable topcoat that prepares your components for outdoor use. The right topcoat protects your components from damage caused by UV light and weathering and increases the overall durability of your powder coating. Standard polyesters can provide five to 10 years of protection while fluoropolymer-based powders can withstand up to two decades of use in the harshest environments.
